Sunscreen for Dark Skin
Does it make sense for me as a dark-skinned black woman, to wear sunscreen?
Yes it does! Growing up with the biggest sunscreen myth that darker skin tones don’t need a daily dose of SPF, has led me to neglect protecting my skin for years from the sun.
My skin is prone to hyperpigmentation that is mostly caused by sun exposure. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) is one of the most effective way for me to prevent sun-induced discoloration and keep my skin in general protected and healthy.
Melanin does give darker complexions some sun protection, but it’s not enough to ward off those damaging rays. Anyone, no matter their skin tone, need to use a sunscreen to protect our skin from sun-induced damage — such as sun spots, wrinkles and cancer.
Just make sure you’re getting the best protection against sun damage, by using at least a SPF of 20, that doesn’t leave a noticeable white cast on your melanin rich skin.

Sun Lotion SPF 30
The sun lotion is available in two different variants: We have the normal variant and the sensitive variant. The sensitive one was specially developed for sensitive and allergy-prone skin.
Its particularly mild formulation doesn’t contain synthetic or allergenic fragrances. I mostly apply the sun lotion before I go outside. Both products are waterproofed in case it gets wet.
Mineral Sun Spray SPF 50
The sun protect series has been newly supplemented with a mineral sun spray. It offers a more quick and easy way to apply sunscreen.
It has an extra high sun protection factor of 50 and absorbed quickly into my skin without sticking and greasing. When applied, there are literally no traces left behind. This makes it also suitable for my skin tone.
Facial Sun Cream
For the face I use the waterproof facial sun cream with SPF 30. It’s very easy to apply and has a mild-pleasant smell.
Aftersun Gel
At the end of the day there is still the aftersun gel. Honestly I’m not used to use an after sun in my skin care routine. But after I figured out how it actually works, it makes sense for me to use one.
Apart from providing cooling relief to sunburned skin, the after sun helps to soothe and hydrate your skin. This can reduce the effects of free radical damage. I apply it after my skin is exposed to the sun.
Natural Blue Light Protector
Did you know that blue screen light from cell phones and computers can promote the development of free radicals?
Knowing this left me a bit skeptical because I spend an average time of ten hours a day sitting in front of a screen.
